Enjoy two full days of activities at Chiawa Camp, located in the stunning Lower Zambezi National Park, along the banks of the mighty Zambezi River. Zambia’s premier luxury safari camp, Chiawa offers up a diverse range of activities all in the company of Africa’s finest guides.
Game drives in an open 4×4 safari vehicle. This is the most effective way to see wildlife and can get close sightings. Game walks are an interesting way to get a “back stage pass” look at the wildlife and how the ecology of the Lower Zambezi works. Your guides are trained naturalists who can not only identify spoor, birds, plants and insects but also explain in interesting detail how these all interact with each other.
Canoe trips always head downstream, eastwards, as the current of the Zambezi is deceptively powerful. The canoes take either 2 or 3 people. All trips are led by at least one pro guide with current experience of that stretch of the river.
Boat Cruises or River Safaris are conducted on custom built, stable pontoon boats with a canopy Guided by one of the expert river guides who will have grown up on the Zambezi, explore the main bank, islands and channels coming across fish eagles, herons, perhaps a buffalo lurking in the reeds, a crocs and hippos sunning themselves, or elephants crossing the river – these are a relaxing way to enjoy wildlife viewing all the while in awe of the scenery.
Fishing for tiger fish, for those who are keen, is one of the seasonal specialties of the Zambezi Rive (late August to mid November during the hotter months is the best time).
There are two photographic/viewing hides close to Chiawa Camp. These are treated as a walking activity inasmuch that there will be a pro guide and armed ZAWA escort accompanying you due to their locations. The Scouts Hollow, just by the edge of the Zambezi River, is fabulous for many types of Zambian wildlife, and another just above camp by the water tank overflow has shown to be very active. This provides an eye-level, completely unobstructed view of the animals that drink there during all times of the day or night.

Sausage Tree Camp offers some of the finest game viewing in natural habitats anywhere in Africa. It’s location within the Lower Zambezi National Park on the banks of the Zambezi River means that game viewing activities take place both on the water, by boat and canoes, and on the land by four-wheel drive game viewing vehicles or on foot (bush walks). The camp is well equipped with game viewing vehicles, boats and canoes allowing us to easily cater to the personal and individual needs of all our guests. Sausage Tree Camp employs the most knowledgeable and experienced guides. All of our guides are fully trained, licensed and have many years of experience, ensuring that the highest quality of guiding and safety standards are achieved. We pride ourselves on our development program for our junior guides.
Game Drives
Game drives are the most successful way to see a good variety of wildlife, both large and small. Visiting more areas, and witnessing the diversity of the Lower Zambezi National Park you can appreciate the unspoiled wilderness of Zambia. A larger area can be covered in a shorter time frame, increasing the chance to find good game. The vehicles also allow those ‘up close and personal’ experiences – our team of professional guides will ensure that it is not too close! Night drives are the perfect way to experience the nocturnal animals, including the elusive leopard, genet, civet, porcupine and giant eagle owl. The big cats tend to be more active at night and you may find yourself following lions on the hunt. Your guide will also point out the constellations of the Southern night sky.
Walking
Walking is the perfect way to search for the smaller creatures, learn about the trees, the plants and examine the different tracks and signs. Walking was pioneered in Zambia and remains one of the few areas where this can be truly enjoyed. Led by a professional walking guide and National Parks Wildlife Officer, walking is carried out in small groups. Taking advantage of the cooler morning temperatures, you will take a game drive from camp to an open area where the walk begins. Beware -not only do you see the smaller things on foot, it is also not uncommon for us to see lion on our bush walks.
Canoeing
The Lower Zambezi is renowned for its spectacular canoeing. As one of the few privileged operators based inside the National Park, we are able to canoe guests down the most stunning section of the Zambezi, “The Chifungulu Channel”. Led by one of our highly qualified canoe guides, explore the banks of the river, where game can be seen from a totally different perspective – looking UP rather than down! Canoe trips vary in length (from one to seven hours) however a one-hour canoe trip is a great prelude to an evening game drive. No experience or particular strength is required – it is an effortless drift, as the flow of the Zambezi pushes the canoes along. Rather than a work out, this is a time to relax, listen to the sounds of the huge variety of bird-life and admire their sheer beauty. A full day canoe trip, stopping for a picnic lunch en-route is an unbeatable safari experience.

Belmond Eagle Island Lodge has reopened as the ultimate Okavango Delta water- experience-focused safari lodge, unveiling a sleek new look after an almost total rebuild. Eagle Island Lodge is one of Botswana’s original safari lodges, perched on a private island encircled by some of the deepest stretches of the Okavango Delta, one of the world’s largest inland water systems and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
On a walking safari through the Delta you are totally enveloped in nature. You spot amazing things close-up: an insect, animal tracks, big game droppings, swarming termite mounds. These small, unexpected aspects of life often make the biggest impression. If a game drive is like reading a book: a walking safari is like actually becoming a character in that book.
Embark on a mokoro canoe safari. This traditional dugout canoe takes you gliding over shallow, clear waters past brilliant water lilies and papyrus grasses to areas inaccessible by boat.
Motorboat safaris up the Delta takes to closer to nature and far of areas not acceptable by foot or vehicle. In the late afternoon, head out on a barge cruise for a gently cruise down the Delta for sundowners, you might just see a Fish Eagle taking flight or pods of hippos in the distance through an African sunset.
Belmond Eagle Island Lodge is positioned close to Xaxaba village. On request you may visit the village and you may be invited into a private home to experience aspects of their way of life. This is no tourist attraction, but a community of people who have adapted ancient traditions to modern times.
At an additional cost, you can book a helicopter safari. Here you experience the remoteness of the Okavango Delta and get a bird’s eye view of the inaccessible lakes and islands.

Enjoy two full days at Savute Elephant Lodge.
Early morning and late afternoon game drives take you out and among Africa’s largest populations of elephants. Big cats are on the prowl, from leopards to lions. Depending on the season you will also experience the great migrations such as zebra and antelope. Rare sightings might include the endangered wild dog, rock-climbing klipspringers and the elegant roan antelope.
You can also visit the ancient San rock paintings. These works by Bushmen are thought to be more than 1,500 years old—beautiful images of elephant, giraffe, sable and eland antelope. Normally these types of painting might be found hidden in caves, but here, unusually, they are out in the wide, open landscape. No-one knows what materials the bushmen used, but the paint is thought to be a mixture of snake venom, blood and plant juices. After viewing these paintings, continue to the amazing baobab grove—a cathedral-like cluster of 13 giant trees that rival the Bushmen’s paintings in age. Stand among these towering columns at sunset, as the evening light bathes them in a russet glow and wonder at this ancient land.
The open skies around Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge make it the perfect place to experience the vast, dark dome of the African night sky. “A jewel box” is how one of our guides describes it, and certainly it is a wealth of riches from the Milky Way to Orion and Venus. Discover how Bushmen used the stars to locate the true south. And, using a powerful telescope, gaze on constellations that visitors from the northern hemisphere may never have seen before, including the Southern Cross.
