At 8:00 am you will be collected from your hotel by a Wilderness Private Journeys guide, and transferred to Cape Town Station, Platform 23, to board the Rovos Rail for the two-night journey to Pretoria.
Recapture the romance and atmosphere of a bygone era as you step aboard the reconditioned wood-panelled coaches and enjoy fine cuisine in five-star luxury. The train departs at 11:00 AM. Guests may freshen up in their suites before joining fellow travellers in the lounge car or observation car at the rear of the train. At 1:00 PM lunch is served in the dining cars. By 3:00 PM, the train reaches Worcester in the Hex River Valley before climbing ยฑ750m up the face of the escarpment. By about 3:30 PM, the train arrives at the first of four tunnels on the pass. The third tunnel is 13.5 kilometres long so guests are to
be careful when walking through the train and may wish to turn on necessary lights.
At 4:30 PM, tea is served in the lounge car and observation car at the rear of the train. At 5:45 PM, you can disembark at Matjiesfontein, a bygone era long forgotten, which 100 years later remains a perfectly preserved Victorian railway village and a National Monument. Of special interest is the museum on the platform and a collection of historic cars and railway carriages to the right of the Lord Milner Hotel. At 7:00 PM depart Matjiesfontein. Continue overnight through the Karoo. Occupying an epic area of 40, 000 square kilometres, the Great Karoo sweeps through South Africa with spectacular semi-desert vegetation and a fascinating history. Once an enormous inland sea, the region as it is now is the result of millions of years of ground-down volcanic matter which was deposited as silt upon the seabed and forms what geologists call the Karoo System.
Dinner is served at 7:30 PM in the dining cars en route to Kimberley. Overnight on board.
General make-up of the train Locomotive, generator car, staff car, guest sleepers, a non-smoking lounge car (26 guests), two non-smoking 42-seat dining cars (if required, plenty of space for the maximum of 72 guests carried), kitchen car, guest sleepers, smoking lounge and Observation Car (32 guests) at the tail.
Cuisine Meals are served in one sitting only in the charming Victorian atmosphere of the dining cars and are complemented by a selection of fine South African wines. An enthusiastic team of chefs is responsible for overseeing the very important task of ensuring guestsโ every need is catered for. Thereโs an accent on fresh local ingredients and traditional dishes such as game are a specialty.
Dress For days on the train dress is smart casual. Evening attire is more formal โ for the gentlemen a jacket and tie is a minimum requirement while for ladies we suggest cocktail/evening dresses or suits. Please include warm clothing for cold mornings and evenings.
Mobile Devices and Internet In maintaining the spirit of travel of a bygone era, there are no radios or television sets on board. The use of mobile phones, laptops and essentially anything that has the ability to disturb other passengers is confined to the privacy of your suites.
Smoking is only allowed in the privacy of your suite and in the Club Lounge.

Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10:00 AM as you travel through the Klein Karoo. As the smaller and more southerly sibling of the Great Karoo, the Klein Karoo or Little Karoo is a fertile valley bordered by the Swartberg, Langeberg and Outenique mountains. Though at first glance the area appears arid, dry and bare, the Klein Karoo holds plenty of special environmental secrets that makes it a prime farming and wine making spot in South Africa.
At 1:30 PM, lunch is served in the dining cars. At 2:30 PM, arrive into Kimberley, and disembark for a tour of the city, Diamond Mine Museum and the Big Hole. Just 150 years ago, the site of [Kimberleyโs Big Hole diamond mine was nothing more than an everyday, flat-topped hill. Today, the famed site owns the title of largest man-made excavation in the world and features a colossal 214-meter hole from which over 2722 kilograms of diamonds have been extracted. At its peak during the late 1800โs, the Big Hole was the biggest diamond mining location in South Africa and there are currently efforts to register the Big Hole as a world heritage site due to its cultural and historic significance.
Depart Kimberley at 4:00 PM. Ten minutes after leaving Kimberley, a shallow lake appears on the left-hand side of the train where, on most occasions, there are spectacular flocks of Lesser Flamingos (approximately 23 000). Tea is served in the lounge car and observation car at the rear of the train at 4:30 PM, and at 7:30 PM dinner is served in the dining cars en route to Klerksdorp. Overnight on board.

The great Serengeti wildebeest migration is the movement of vast numbers of the Serengeti’s wildebeest, accompanied by large numbers of zebra, and smaller numbers of Grant’s gazelle, Thomson’s gazelle, eland and impala. These move in an annual pattern which is fairly predictable. They migrating throughout the year, constantly seeking fresh grazing and, it’s now thought, better quality water. The precise timing of the Serengeti wildebeest migration is entirely dependent upon the rainfall patterns each year.
The short rains begin around early November. A little after this, in late November and December, the herds of the wildebeest migration arrive on the short-grass plains of the Serengeti. These are south and east of Seronera, around Ndutu and include the north of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Dispersed across these plains, wildebeest and zebra are everywhere โ feeding on the fresh, nutritious grasses. They stay here through January, February and March, with most wildebeest calves born in a short window around February. Gradually they spread west across these plains, then around April they start their great migration north. Twice daily game drives allow you to witness the herds grazing across the southern plains, and predators, as they lie await for there next meal!

At a time to be advised, you will be collected from your hotel by a Classic Africa Safaris representative for your morning tour and transfer to Volcanoes National Park.
The history of Rwanda dates back centuries, Kigali has been a part of it for a hundred years. Founded in 1907 as a German settlement, Kigali did not become the capital until Rwandaโs independence in 1962 when it replaced the colonial seat of power in Butare. Since then, the city has seen major economic development resulting in what it is today; a vibrant African city of 1 million with wide boulevards, an international airport, world-class hotels and restaurants, crafts & curio shops as well as a lively, cosmopolitan population. On a morning tour, visit the Kandt Museum, tour old Kigali and the Craft centers, and the genocide memorial site where you learn about Rwandaโs history pre-colonial to 1994 genocide as well as other genocides in the world.
After lunch depart for Volcanoes National Park, Rwandaโs preeminent attraction, and arguably the best place in Africa for mountain gorilla trekking (about 3 hour’s drive). The looming volcanoes and mist-shrouded forests are a suitably atmospheric setting in which to encounter these charismatic great apes. Arrive at Bisate Lodge where you will stay for two nights.
Bisate Lodge combines the bucket-list gorilla trek with a pioneering vision of reforestation and community partnership. Bisate is located in the natural amphitheatre of an eroded volcanic cone, with dramatic views of the peaks of the Bisoke and Karisimbi volcanoes rearing up through Afro-alpine forests. . After breakfast, you will be collected from your lodge, and taken for a Gorilla Trek. Gorilla trekking takes place from Volcanoes National Park headquarters where guests are allocated one of the twelve habituated gorilla groups to visit for an hour. After a briefing by Park rangers, the time of the trek varies depending which gorilla group is being visited โ from 45 minutes to a few hours. Trekking is at a high altitude, but is well worth it; the time spent with gorillas has been described as โlife changing!โ
Twelve habituated groups can be tracked and observed in the Volcanoes National Park. While tracking expeditions do not necessarily cover enormous distances, they can range in length from 1-8 km (0.5-5 miles) over very steep country at high altitudes. The undergrowth can be thick, the ground beneath muddy, and, including the time spent with a gorilla group, excursions can last between 2 and 8 hours. Our exhilarating trek, in the footsteps of the rare and critically endangered Mountain Gorillas, the largest living primate on earth, starts in the cultivated foothills of the Virungas with stirring views in all directions. Upon entering the national park, her paths littered with fresh spoor of the mountainsโ elusive buffalo and elephant, trekkers will be immersed in the mysterious intimacy of the rainforest, alive with colorful bird calls, butterflies, etc. Through gaps in the canopy, the magnificent Virunga peaks, among the highest in Africa yet easily accessible, are glimpsed, beckoning an ascent.
Weaving through overhanging vines, moss-covered hagenia and giant lobelias that thrive in the tropical climate, our experienced trackers, they spent their entire lives in or close to this forest, soon bring us up close with the family. Upon sighting the gorillas, you will stay with them for a magical hour as they go about their daily life, feeding, playing, resting; raising their young. Coming face to face with a giant silverback must truly be one of the greatest wildlife experiences on earth.
Gorilla viewing protocol is based on the guidelines issued by the IUCN for great ape viewing. Such protocols are designed specifically to limit stress and behavioural impact and also potential disease transmission from humans to gorillas. They are critical for gorilla conservation.
Again, to minimise possible transmission of human diseases, visitors are asked to maintain a distance of 7 metres (about 22 feet) from the gorillas. Guests that display cold, flu or other respiratory tract symptoms will not be allowed to track gorillas.
After returning to the lodge for lunch, time permitting, you may visit the Twin Lakes or the markets in Musanze.

After an early breakfast depart on the Golden Monkey trek, which begins at Volcanoes National Park headquarters at 7:00 AM. This beautifully-colored primate is endemic to the area and lives in groups of up to 30 individuals in the bamboo forest, its preferred source of food. Tracking of the golden monkeys is also a thrilling experience that gives an impressive happenstance with these beautiful species of monkey. These have also got a prominent golden fur coat, and this also adds to their unique attractiveness and are so lovely to look at and give an exceptional photography. These monkeys will easily be found as they mostly live at the bottom of the Volcano Mountains with in the bamboo forest, and by just following the traces of fresh leftovers from the bamboo shoots eaten, the trackers are then able to locate them with in less than an hour.
