Venture out on morning and afternoon game drives. The elephants are no doubt the kings of the park and they are available in big numbers. These elephants can be seen and photographed easily because of the flat terrain. The elephants in Amboseli, which are also considered to be among the biggest in the country, mainly enjoy the swamps, in which they get cool waters that they share with hippos that hide beneath the papyrus.
A large resident population of wildbeest together with Burchellโs zebra, also have a home in the park. Thomsonโs and Grantโs gazelles, bufallo, warthog, black rhino, Maasai giraffe, impala, waterbuck and dik-dik, are also among the grass-eaters there. Baboons and vervet monkeys live in the scarce woodlands.
Lions, spotted hyenas, wild cats, jackals and caracals represent the carnivores. Cheetah and leopards are not so common. As far as birds are concerned, there exists more than 400 species, including pelican, flamingo, kingfisher, African fish eagle, ibis, secretary bird, crowned crane, grey and Goliath herons, cattle egret, Black-winged stilt, little grebe, Egyptian goose, martial eagle, Pigmy falcon, Maasai ostrich, Marabou stork, White-backed vulture, Lappet-faced vulture, Yellow-necked spurfowl, Kori bustard, Hornbills and many others. The park gathers a big population of water birds after the rains.

After breakfast descend into Ngorongoro Crater. From the rim of the crater, view an awesome panorama of the worldโs largest, unflooded and unbroken caldera. Descend into the 100-square-mile Ngorongoro Crater to view game on the vast grasslands of the crater floor. This magnificent natural amphitheater is said to have the largest concentration of animals in all of Africa, including a high density of lions and thousands of flamingos. The ever-changing mood of this great amphitheater will hold your attention every second.
Formed by the collapsed cone of a Great Rift Valley volcano some three million years ago, the Ngorongoro Crater is a spectacular natural sanctuary to more than 30,000 animals. More than 350 species of birds have been recorded. Its steep, unbroken rim plunges 2,000 feet to a 102 square mile floor. It is known as the Eighth Wonder of the World. Its vastness and beauty are truly overwhelming. Many scientists suggest that before its eruption, this volcano was larger than Mt. Kilimanjaro.
The crater contains a variety of ecosystems and an astounding concentration of birds and animals. Encounter massive herds of zebra, wildebeest, and gazelles. This area affords an opportunity to spot the Big Five, which includes African elephant, leopard, the black-maned lion, buffalo, and the rare black rhinoceros.
Before returning to your lodge, visit a Maasai village and meet with an elder to learn about local culture and traditions.

Depart for Serengeti National Park, visiting Olduvai Gorge en route. Slicing its way almost 100m down into the plains northwest of Ngorongoro Crater, this dusty, 50km long ravine is one of the continentโs best known archeological sites. Due to a unique geological history, the Olduvai Gorge is composed of layer upon layer of volcanic deposits laid down in an orderly sequence over a period of almost 2 million years. Because of this, the Olduvai Gorge allows archeologists to chart the story of life back to the days of our earliest ancestors.

Stretching as far as the eye can see, this sprawling national park is amongst the largest in Tanzania. In the south find open plains, a sweeping savannah speckled with acacia trees in the center, rolling grasslands to the north, and dense woodlands and black clay pans in the west. One of the most popular in Africa, the Serengeti National Park attracts 100,000 visitors annually.
Within its majestic scenery find the distinctive stone outcroppings known as kopjes with rounded curves, the result of years of erosion. Attracting baboons, hyraxes, hyenas and klipspringers, these outcroppings are perfect for viewing wildlife, but can also be dangerous as they attract cobras and leopards. Within the woodlands of the Serengeti witness eland, giraffes, impalas, elephants and buffaloes. The plains attract gazelles and ostriches, while the swamps of the west call to a splendid variety of birds.

At dawn you will climb aboard a hot air balloon and fly along the course of the Mara River and over the vast plains as the sun rises. At a time to be advised by lodge management, you will be transferred to the launch site in time to see the flight preparations. This is a unique and incredible opportunity to witness the majesty of the African bush. Suspended in a basket beneath the balloons canopy, you will have the chance to view the wildlife from an entirely different perspective. As you float over the plains and above the forest alongside the Mara River, you will see Hippos, Crocodile and Elephant from above. The flight time is generally in the region of one hour and ends with breakfast in the open grassland within the reserve.
Return to the lodge for some siesta time before the afternoon game drive. At Sanctuary Olonana, game viewing starts from the camp. A pod of hippos lives permanently in the river just below camp and many other species come to drink there. Sanctuary’s experienced guides take you to all the hidden spots and our customized open safari vehicles offer all-round views, allowing for excellent photography opportunities. The Mara’s rich eco-system includes acacia-studded savanna, riparian forest and woodland which attract more than 300 bird species and a stunning variety of animal life all year round.
Get an insight into the vibrant and still traditional way of life of the Maasai on an optional visit to a local village. Learn about the medicinal plants that grow here, the importance of cattle and the stages of life through which all Maasai pass, from young boy or girl to respected elder. Interaction and discussion is encouraged, so whether the ladies are building a hut, the warriors are dancing or making fire with stones and sticks, guests are free to join in.
You have the opportunity to take an optional nature walk. Walk with a naturalist and learn about plants, trees and insects and their use in the daily lives of the Maasai tribe. Visit the award-winning wetlands which cleanses wastewater naturally before returning it to the environment. There is an opportunity to plant a tree, leaving a positive mark in Africa. The naturalist shares his intimate knowledge of the surrounding environment and how many of the trees and plants are used for medicinal purposes. Watch the hippos, learn to identify the birds from their song, stop and learn about insects and even the fascinating system ants have to build and maintain their ant-hills. Your guide will also point out animal signs which are everywhere, but not that easily noticed.
More and more popular are the visits organized by guides to a variety of local schools during school term. These visits are free but we would recommend a donation to the school of anything upward of per person.
