This morning, you will enjoy your first day of Gorilla Trekking!
After a morning briefing by the Volcanoes National Park‘s guides on how to behave in the forest and in the presence of mountain gorillas, you will then enter the park for a gorilla trek which will take you until around midday depending on where you find them. Once the gorillas are located all fatigue is forgotten, as the experience is often described as being the most profound natural history experience in the world. It is important to take plenty of water. Cameras and plenty of fast speed film is recommended. It can rain at a few minutesโ notice; hence waterproof clothing is a good essential including zip lock bags for cameras and film. After the trek, lunch will be at the lodge. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure for optional excursions/activities.

This morning, you will be collected for your second gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park!
With the thrill of yesterdayโs trek still fresh in your mind, head out once more in search of these amazing beasts! The second trek offers you enough time to put down the camera and appreciate the whole environment and setting as it unfolds in front of you without a viewfinder in the way. To begin to fully realize the special shared genetic history of our two species. To study and comprehend the social interactions of the family you are visiting. Take it all in.
Similarly to yesterday’s trek, you’ll be transferred by your guide to park headquarters early in the morning where you will wait to begin your gorilla trek. Please note that the trek can take up to eight hours and is on uneven terrain and can be a challenging hike. The duration of the trek is highly variable depending on the location of the gorilla family you’re visiting, and once you find the family, you’ll be able to spend one magical hour with them, watching them interact, feed and play. Once the trek is over and you’re back at Park Headquarters, you’ll be transferred back to the lodge to rest for the remainder of the day.

This morning you may spend the morning at leisure or choose an additional activity:
HONORING DIAN FOSSEY HIKE: Trekking to the Dian Fossey tomb is one of the most coveted and rewarding activities in the Volcanoes National Park. The walk to the Karisoke Research Centre, set up by Fossey, takes around 1 to 1.5-hours and is an incredible experience physically and emotionally. Youโll learn about the amazing life and legacy of the American activist and cover incredible floral landscapes with the chance to spot a variety of native creatures, from forest hogs to primates and colorful birds.
GOLDEN MONKEY TRACKING: With their prominent golden fur coat, wide fuzzy faces, and beady eyes, the endangered golden monkeys are a thrilling highlight of the national park โ amazing to observe up close. Following the fresh leftovers of bamboo, their large groups are usually easy to trace at the bottom of the volcanoes. Youโll love simply watching them graze, socialize, and leap dramatically between trees with the aid of long tails.
ASCENT TO CRATER LAKE: Indulge in an epic adventure on the Bisoke volcano, scaling the forest to be rewarded with a spectacular crater lake at the summit. Approximately 4-hours up and 2-hours down, depending on ability, the experienced rangers will reveal a world of wonder as you traverse the rugged landscape. From native flora and fauna to local history, youโll learn and see a lot during this full-day jungle expedition.
MUSANZE CAVE EXPLORATION: Step back in time to a network of caves formed 65 million years ago by molten lava flows that forged the epic Albertine Rift Valley. 2-kilometers of easy hiking through the caves reveals dramatic rock formations, dotted with cascading light shafts, spilling greenery, and no doubt youโll meet the local colony of bats, casually hanging from the stone.
BUHANGA ECOPARK: This intimate forest is a hidden treasure that holds a great deal of biological and cultural significance. The park is set upon an ancient sacred site that was used for the coronation rituals of Rwandan kings. Rugged trails are forged of cut lava stones, weaving through sprawling plants and towering trees to the natural soundtrack of birds and the flash of colorful butterflies. There are several sites of interest to visit along the way, and plenty of folklore to charm you.
IBYโIWACU CULTURAL VILLAGE: Follow the sounds of thunderous drumming and joyful dancing to this traditional Rwandan village, located just outside the national park. A โliving museumโ, it reveals the rituals of life in the ancient Rwandan kingdom and features hands-on activities to acquaint you with the friendly locals. Some of the presenters and performers are in fact former poachers who have been rehabilitated by the opportunity to work in the village.
Later, depart with your private vehicle/driver to Kigali and the Radisson Blu Hotel where you will have a room available to relax before your flight to Johannesburg. At a time to be advised: You will be collected from your hotel by a Wilderness Rwanda representative and transferred to Kigali International Airport for your 10:30 pm flight.
