Game Drives

The cornerstone of a safari experience at Serian is that each group has their own open-top safari vehicle, and their own dedicated guide and spotter. The freedom this grants you is key to getting the most out of your stay: go where the day takes you, without the limitations of fixed schedules, or fitting in with other peoples’ plans. Nothing but personal desire need dictate what you do. The vehicles are specially customized to be a climbing frame, and a photographer’s extra tool. They are comfortable, able to handle the terrain, and cover the distance…. And were designed for sun, rain, wind, and above all, the feeling of having as little as possible separating you from what’s out there. Our guides and spotters are intimately familiar with these special places, so they know all its secrets and the ways the animals interact with it, from the subtle changes of the seasons, to the stages of an animals life cycle, to the flora that sustains it all – they are the key that can unlock it all for you.

Early Morning Walks

Walking safaris epitomize the golden chance to get away from the trails and beaten tracks, and immerse in the environment in a way that the noise and speed of vehicles don’t permit. Once you slow down, there’s a whole world that you never noticed before. The beauty of walking is that it engenders an appreciation of an ecosystem’s sheer perfection: every tiny element has its place, and plays its role. Stripping away the layers between you and an untamed setting beckons forth your primal instincts: your hearing, sight and smell all sharpen in response – and your appreciation of what you perceive is heightened as a result. At Serian, you walk in your own private conservation area – a strictly no-vehicle zone that only guests have access to. Here, you are likely to have close encounters with elephant, buffalo, hippo as well as more rare species like Chandler’s Mountain Reedbuck, klipspringer and oribi. We employ scouts whose job it is to patrol the area and look out for snares, and walking in their company yields an insight into the land from the point of view of someone who roams it every day and knows it intimately.

Adventure Flycamping

It takes its name from sleeping in the bush under nothing more than a flysheet. The premise is that you spend the days walking, and the nights sleeping out in light weight tents, in a makeshift camp that moves each day – the end of each day’s walk brings you to your new site for the night. Flycamping can easily be incorporated into your stay at an extra cost, with some nights spent in main camp before and after. It can add a whole new dimension to your experience, and a taste of the wilderness that few others ever encounter.

Night Game Drives

This is an exploration of the enigmatic nightlife that you might be oblivious to as you sit around the dinner table and proceed to bed. Nocturnal creatures emerge, the heavens are festooned with stars, and the landscape mutates into a whole other world by the light of the moon. Take a flask of soup and a picnic dinner, and set out with a spotlight: if nothing else, the solitude and silence by starlight is reason enough in itself. Using red-filtered bulbs to avoid dazzling the animals, scan the plains for that pride of lion looking ready to hunt. Once you’ve spotted them, switch to infrared floodlights, and watch the scene unfold through our infrared cameras. This is as close as you’ll get to invisibility, watching the wildlife without the fact of your presence affecting it.

Hot Air Ballooning

At an additional price you can enjoy this exhilarating activity. An early morning departure from Ngare Serian will see you at your launchpad. Suspended in a basket beneath the balloon’s canopy, you float over the plains and above the forest alongside the Mara River, checking out hippos, crocodile and elephant from high above. The flight time is generally in the region of one hour and ends with a champagne breakfast in the open grassland within the reserve. An unbeatable start to the day!

Upon arrival into Nairobi, after completing immigration and customs formalities, collect your baggage and proceed to the Arrivals Hall. Here you will be met by an Alluring Africa representative for your private road transfer to Giraffe Manor where you will stay for one night.

This classic ivy-clad manor house is home to a tower of Rothschild giraffe that live in the grounds of the hotel. The large verandah and terrace is perfect for feeding them by hand. These giraffes are all wild and there’s a breeding and conservation program at the Giraffe Centre located in Giraffe Manor’s grounds, which we invite you to visit. There’s lots to do here including visiting the Karen Blixen Museum, dedicated to the great Danish explorer and a visit to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust where you can meet orphaned elephant and rhinoceros. We also offer the chance to shop for art and gifts from local Kenyan designers, artists and craftspeople.

Segera is the central wildlife sanctuary in Laikipia, situated in the wooded savannah and grasslands of the Laikipia Plateau at an altitude of 5,577 – 5,906 ft and immediately north of the equator. Home to a vast array of animal, bird and plant life, Segera provides an important corridor for the migration of elephant and other wide ranging species. Segera’s central location and expansive 20 000 hectares (50 000 acres) at the very heart of Laikipia ensures that it is essential to effective wildlife and habitat management for the Ewaso ecosystem as a whole, forming part of a vital migratory corridor and providing a permanent home to many endangered species.

Activities on offer include game drives, guided nature walks and local community visits. Scenic light aircraft or helicopter flights can be arranged at an additional cost, offering a bird’s-eye view of the incredible landscape and insights into the ecosystem. If a camp’s success lies in its details, then Mara Plains Camp is truly blessed, located as it is on a bend in the Ntiakitiak River in the heart of the 35,000-acre Olare Motorogi Conservancy which abuts Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve to its south. One of only five camps on the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, guests at Mara Plains have unrivaled access to more than 100,000 acres of exclusive, low-vehicle density tourism land, home to extensive areas of important habitat for a vast number of wildlife species, while still having unfettered access to the Maasai Mara’s additional 375,000 acres.

Strong populations of wildlife find their habitat in this area. While the “Big Five” are here – rhino, elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo – they are frequently masters of elusivity; however, cheetah, fringe-eared oryx, gerenuk, and giraffe make for frequent viewing. The entire area is reserved exclusively for ol Donyo Lodge guests. Each day is different, there is no set routine. It is there for the making – a safari of the guest’s design. While it may be tempting to laze around the lovely suites, and bask in the sun next to the private pool, the diverse activities at ol Donyo Lodge are equally as alluring.

Search for wildlife on day and night game drives. Often, we will simply set out tracking and walking as a means of wildlife viewing. The Mbirikani Group Ranch features an incredible diversity of habitats. Perhaps the most unique is the high-altitude mist forest, where leopard and rhino lurk, and an incredible amount of biodiversity is present. It is a microcosm, unlike any other area of the ranch. So in addition to tracking, a hike to this area, from the lodge, is very rewarding.

The Chyulu Hills and its diverse ecosystem lend itself perfectly to horseback safaris. From the mist forests, to the open plains, to the dense woodland, a horse navigates the landscape gracefully. To come along for the ride, and experience wildlife on horseback, is an experience not to be missed.

Wildlife viewing from mountain biking is an exhilarating exploratory activity. Set out across the savannahs with an armed guide and enjoy the freedom of riding on the open plains potentially viewing amongst others, zebras and wildebeests.

You can also visit the Maasai villages on the ranch, without a sense of voyeurism. It is an authentic experience, giving guests insight into the culture and traditions of the Maasai. Please note the Maasai do charge a small fee for taking photos.

The camp is located inside the Masai Mara National Reserve in the heart of one of the best wildlife viewing areas, which means you won’t waste time getting to the action.

Exceptionally highly trained and experienced guides to give offer un-matched game-viewing and photographic opportunities in the world’s prime wildlife area. Game drives in open land rovers are conducted in this area which is widely considered to be the best game viewing area of the Masai Mara.

Just outside the Masai Mara National Reserve is a traditional Masai community called Mara Rianda. There is a traditional Masai homestead or Manyatta which consists of 48 traditional houses surrounding a cattle enclosure. We encourage clients to visit this manyatta if they are interested in Masai culture and would like to experience a way of life unchanged for centuries.

Cottar’s 1920’s Safari Camp is situated in a timelessly unspoiled setting with sunset views stretching to distant horizons of the Masai Mara and the Serengeti plains covered in boundless game. The Camp has its own 6,000 acre private conservancy and is situated one kilometer from the Masai Mara game reserve. The location provides easy access for day and night game drives to the Masai Mara game reserve and the conservancy, game walks, and cultural interactions with the Masai community. Consider the option of adding an amazing balloon safari over the Masai Mara at dawn (additional charge).

The Maasai Mara together with Tanzania’s Serengeti form Africa’s most famous wildlife park. The image of acacia trees on an endless grass plain epitomises Africa for many, and then add a Maasai warrior and some cattle to the picture and the conversation need go no further.

The annual wildebeest migration through the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara is the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet – with more than a million animals following the rains. But that is not where the game viewing ends; large prides of lions, elephants and giraffes in grasslands, gazelles and eland to mention but a few. Aside from traditional vehicle safaris, hot-air ballooning over the Mara plains has become almost essential and you can even do a horseback safari.

Dominated by the snow cap of Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli is known for its magnificent elephants a population of over 1,000 elephants reside in the park’s ecosystem that features some of the largest in Africa. Game drives, walks, sundowners and bush meals all take place both inside the Amboseli National Park and within a private 30,000 acre game concession, offering fantastic game viewing opportunities.

The Tortilis Camp guides are based at camp in Amboseli and know their backyard intimately. They know the individual elephants and their family histories. More than half of the guides at Tortilis are Masai, and have between them 80 years of guiding at Tortilis! Open gamedrive vehicles are designed specifically for comfort and photography – open sided with 3 rows of seats, photographic equipment stands, and charging sockets. Guests will share game drives unless “exclusive use of vehicle” has been prebooked at an extra charge. With only 10% of Amboseli National Park utilized by most safari vehicles, combined with Tortilis Camp’s unique location on the western edge of the park, guests can enjoy an almost private Amboseli. There is also private game driving within the camp’s 30,000 acre Kitirua Conservancy, which is the western part of the Amboseli ecosystem.

Take the time to leave the car behind and enjoy the small things – tracks, dung beetles, micro-ecosystems. During game walks, the guides are happy to share their knowledge of the terrain, traditional uses of wild herbs and barks, and the Masai way of life.

In the heart of Masai country, Tortilis Camp offers visits to local Masai homesteads. The families will show you round their home for a fee (payable separately, ask reception for details), and will want to take the opportunity to sell their traditional handicrafts, known for their beautiful beadwork, spear in hand and bright red colored “shukkas” (blankets worn as clothes). The Masai co-exist with wildlife as they are traditionally nomadic and pastoral, they live off their cattle and goats; this is their lifestyle, jobs, and currency – it is thanks to this lifestyle that vast tracts of wilderness teaming with wildlife have been preserved.

“Sundowners” are a safari tradition. After a day of safari, stop and watch the spectacular sunset; traditionally with a gin and tonic in hand, before gathering for dinner to exchange stories of the day’s sightings.

Nairobi is Africa’s 4th largest city and is a vibrant and exciting place and although it has developed a reputation which keeps tourist visits brief there are some fascinating attractions: its café culture, unbridled nightlife, the National Museum, the Karen Blixen Museum and most notably just 20 minutes from the city centre wild lions and buffalo roam in the world’s only urban game reserve.

Follow in the footsteps of Karen Blixen as you travel towards the Ngong Hills, you feel swept immediately onto the film set of Out of Africa the moment you arrive. The old colonial farmhouse is simple, housing a few items that Karen Blixen chose and once enjoyed herself. There are also the colorful gardens to explore, where several old coffee machines have laid untouched for decades. From here visit the Giraffe Centre, where the highly endangered Rothschild giraffe lives in peace. With an elevated viewing-cum-feeding platform, this tour is wonderful for children.

Continue to Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage situated on the outskirts of Nairobi. The Sanctuary is run by Daphne Sheldrick and is set in the grounds of her house. Here, you will see the orphaned animals and meet the people who handle and care for these animals. It’s an interesting excursion and the team who run the orphanage are always willing to spend time answering any questions guests have to ask.
