All Kifaru House guides have been certified Bronze or Silver level by the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association, and they are all passionate about their land and the wildlife that they share it with. As well as the botany, palaeontology and history of Lewa, they also have an intimate knowledge of the individual rhino, cheetah and lion families that have made the Conservancy their home range.
There are strict limits on the number of tourists allowed in the Conservancy at one time, which allows guests to enjoy an almost private game viewing experience. Within the protected area the wildlife is abundant and game viewing is outstanding. With one of the biggest rhino populations in Kenya, the Big 5, the rare Grevy’s zebra and plentiful sightings of lion, cheetah and all the plains game set against the magnificent backdrop of snow-capped Mt. Kenya, a game drive from Kifaru House is one of the most spectacular in Kenya.
For the more adventurous, exploring the Conservancy’s diversity on foot is also an option. Accompanied by trained Samburu rangers with a sweeping knowledge of the local flora and fauna, tracks, micro-ecosystems, history and culture of the area, as well as a hands-on knowledge of rhino conservation, a bush walk from Kifaro House is an informative as well as exhilarating experience.
Another chance to leave the car behind is to visit Ngare Ndare Forest Conservancy for the day. Located south of Lewa guests can experience the rich diversity of this beautiful montane forest at eye-level with the monkeys and dozens of bird species high up on the Canopy Walk. Guests will have a sumptuous picnic by the river where they can relax and play. There are usually elephants in the forest, so guests will be escorted by a Lewa Guide.

At Sanctuary Olonana, game viewing starts from the camp. A pod of hippos lives permanently in the river just below camp and many other species come to drink there. Sanctuary’s experienced guides take you to all the hidden spots and our customised open safari vehicles offer all-round views, allowing for excellent photography opportunities. The Mara’s rich eco-system includes acacia-studded savannah, riparian forest and woodland which attract more than 300 bird species and a stunning variety of animal life all year round.
Get an insight into the vibrant and still traditional way of life of the Maasai on a cultural visit to a village. Learn about the medicinal plants that grow here, the importance of cattle and the stages of life through which all Maasai pass, from young boy or girl to respected elder. Accompanied by an experienced Maasai guide you are invited to visit the village which is built along traditional lines; complete with cattle enclosure, outer palisade and mud and cow dung huts. Meet the elders, their wives and families and learn about the social structure of the homestead, the role of women in their society and many more aspects of their daily life. Interaction and discussion is encouraged, so whether the ladies are building a hut, the warriors are dancing or making fire with stones and sticks, guests are free to join in.
Walk with our naturalist and learn about plants, trees and insects and their use in the daily lives of the Maasai tribe. Visit our award-winning wetlands which cleanses wastewater naturally before returning it to the environment. There is an opportunity to plant a tree, leaving a positive mark in Africa. Our naturalist shares his intimate knowledge of the surrounding environment and how many of the trees and plants are used for medicinal purposes. Watch the hippos, learn to identify the birds from their song, stop and learn about insects and even the fascinating system ants have to build and maintain their ant-hills. Your guide will also point out animal signs which are everywhere, but not that easily noticed.
More and more popular are the visits organised by our guides to a variety of local schools during school term. These visits are free but we would recommend a donation to the school of anything upward of per person.

We’d love to guarantee you’ll see the big five. We’re confident you will spot lions, buffalo and elephants, often in great numbers. Leopards and rhino can be shy, but we do all in our power to seek them out. The secret is to make sure you take part in at least one early morning game drive, one full day game drive and an evening game drive (a night drive is a bonus!). The knowledge of our rangers and the sharp eyes of Masai spotters will do the rest.
It is astonishing what the experts can find, secreted among the vast expanses of the Masai Mara. We employ qualified rangers who know every inch of the terrain. They supplement practical Bush experience with study and exams, to ensure they remain constantly fascinating sources of information. On safari, they form a network linked by radio, swapping news and information so that all our vehicles can home in on the action.
However, what really gives our expeditions the edge is the presence of Masai spotters, who sit at the back of each vehicle, using their uncanny powers of observation to detect movements, spoor and other signs of hidden wildlife.
We are one of the very few operators who use these incredibly sharp-eyed tribespeople to augment our rangers’ eyes and ears. They ensure that wherever animals are on the move, we’ll be there.
We never cease to be amazed by the abudant Masai Mara wildlife – a never-ending showcase for untamed nature. Whenever you visit, thousands of predators maintain their timeless hunt for millions of prey. The endless horizons remain a beauteous backdrop throughout the year.
Our guests revel in the constants of the Bush: gazelles feeding in skittish flocks; lions coughing round the camp; hippos bathing in the rivers; topis gazing and grazing from kopje high points; giraffe billowing across the horizon; or simply a porcupine shuffling about its business.
With some 450 bird species to spot, the chance to see a Paradise Flycatcher or Purple Grenadier is matched by endless possibilities. The crocodiles have been with us since the age of the dinosaurs, so we can guarantee they’re heating up on a bank near you. Sometimes it is the smaller sights which bring the greatest delight: a family of dwarf mongoose; a bright green chameleon crossing in front of a leopard tortoise; or even a dung beetle taking on the challenge left by an elephant!

Masai Mara’s terrain is primarily open grassland, interspersed by seasonal rivulets. The density of wildlife is greater in this smaller park; consequently there are more people and vehicles than you would find in the Serengeti. The wonders of Kenya’s Mara are complemented by the wildlife found in the Mara Bushtops conservancy.
The huge advantage of the latter is that you can watch our local carnival of the animals whilst reclining on your tent bed, peering through your deck telescope or sitting at our restaurant overlooking the salt lick. Whatever you see and however it is encountered, one thing is likely to remain a constant: the happy smile, plastered across your face.
