This morning, you will be collected from your hotel by an Alluring Africa representative who will remain at your disposal to explore Nairobi for a half day.

Enjoy a visit to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi. Born from one family’s passion for Kenya and it’s wilderness, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is today the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world and one of the pioneering conservation organizations for wildlife and habitat protection in East Africa. To date the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has successfully hand-raised over 244 infant elephants and has accomplished its long-term conservation priority by effectively reintegrating orphans back into the wild herds of Tsavo, claiming many healthy wild-born calves from former-orphaned elephants raised in care.

From here visit the Giraffe Center, where the highly endangered Rothschild giraffe lives in peace, with an elevated viewing-cum-feeding platform for a close encounter with the fascinating animals.

Follow in the footsteps of Karen Blixen as you travel towards the Ngong Hills, you feel swept immediately onto the film set of Out of Africa the moment you arrive. The old colonial farmhouse is simple, housing a few items that Karen Blixen chose and once enjoyed herself. The Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy is an area of 850,000 acres of pristine wilderness in the Mathews Range. The savanna plains and lush mountain slopes are home to elephant, leopard, reticulated giraffe, wild dog and kudu in ever increasing numbers. This remote and dramatic landscape is also home to the local Samburu people whose age-old traditions, including the famous ‘singing wells’ are as much a part of the fabric of this land as the wildlife.

The emphasis at Sarara is on walking safaris or walking with camels but game drives are also available. It is also possible to arrange walks with fly camping at night. A unique experience of watching the local cattlemen at the singing wells is not to be missed.

Cutting through the reserve, the Uaso Nyiro River lures a large population of animals to the lush park and its banks are a hive of activity. An abundance of wily Nile crocodile can also be found in the river’s waters. Kaleidoscopic birdlife is as prolific as the wildlife in Samburu National Reserve and the reserve is home to over 350 different species of birds, including vultures, kingfishers, marabous, bateleurs, guinea fowl, Somali ostriches and others. Deriving its name from the Samburu people of Kenya, who have inhabited the area for many years, Samburu National Park was one of the two areas in which conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness. Their story gained popularity due to the bestselling book and award-winning movie “Born Free”.

CULTURAL IMMERSION: The Samburu are nomadic pastoralists and follow patterns of rainfall, seeking out lush pastures and water for their cattle, camels, goats and sheep. Clad in a striking red cloth wrapped like a skirt and a white sash, the traditional dress of the Samburu tribe is embellished with vibrant beaded earrings, bracelets, anklets and necklaces. The colorful, decorative jewelry reveals and represents the status of the wearer. A significant and essential part of their culture is the art of dancing.

FLY CAMPING: Hike along the banks of the river until the dusk sets and then enjoy an al fresco dinner around a blazing campfire in a comfortable fly camp before settling into your sleeping bag for the night. Fall asleep slowly as you gaze onto a kaleidoscope of constellations in the velvety dark sky. As you are falling into your slumber, savor the tranquil hush of the serene surroundings of your fly camp. A stay at Ol Pejeta differs from traditional safaris due to the vast array of activities on offer, but the general rhythm is the same. We head out safari in the early morning and late afternoon when animals are at their most active. If you have hired a private vehicle, itineraries can be discussed with your guide.

Start the day bright and early with a wake-up call and tea or coffee. Enjoy breakfast before departing for your morning game drive (or set out a little earlier and take a picnic breakfast). Arrive back in camp mid-morning, with a chance to freshen up before lunch.

After a leisurely lunch, enjoy siesta time. Read a book or just relax and enjoy the views from your tent’s deck. Refuel with afternoon tea and then depart for an afternoon/evening game drive with sundowners. Arrive back at camp in time for drinks and dinner — the perfect chance to unwind after a long day in the bush.

Activities include day and night game drives, bush breakfasts, visits to local schools and community development projects.

Activities that can be booked at an additional cost include: lion tracking, guided ravine river walks, a behind-the-scenes visit to the Endangered Species Enclosure, and half a day with the tracker/attack dogs (depending on availability).

Antelope come out to feed in the cool air, predators take advantage of the cloak of darkness to stalk their prey and nocturnal species such as aardvark, zorilla and white-tailed mongoose begin their day. Join a knowledgeable guide on a night drive and seek out the action that takes place after darkness falls. Today, only two northern white rhino remain in the world and both are found at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in a 2,8 km2 enclosure protected by 24-hour armed security. Take the opportunity to visit the enclosure, learn from the keepers about the efforts being taken to preserve the last of this highly endangered species, as well as view Grévy’s zebra and Jackson’s hartebeest in a private and intimate setting.

Horse riding with rhinos (Endangered Species Enclosure)

The chance to ride amongst the endangered species including the northern white rhinos is a once in a lifetime experience. This predator-free area is wonderful to explore on horseback, with the chance to also encounter other endangered species such as southern white rhinos, Grévy’s zebra or Jackson’s hartebeest.

Canine Anti-Poaching Unit visit

Visit the conservancy’s bloodhound dog kennels and learn about the training that transforms these canines into anti-poaching patrollers. After your tour, you can play a game of human-canine hide and seek, trying to evade the dogs and finding a spot to hide within the Morani Information Centre. A great way to interact, get a bit of exercise for you and the hounds as well as assist in their training.

Guests remain in the vehicle at all times.

Running with the rangers

Keep your fitness levels up while on safari to counteract all the delicious food you’ll be eating by joining the Ol Pejeta Conservancy rangers on their early-morning run. They do this daily to keep fit, and we can arrange for our guests to join them on a run and have a cup of coffee with them afterward to learn more about their work to keep the wildlife on the conservancy safe. A fun and rewarding way to start your day.

Available on Wednesday and Friday at 7 am, maximum six people, minimum age 12 years. Suitable running shoes are needed as well as the ability to run a minimum of five kilometers without stopping. US per person.

Family safaris

Ol Pejeta is an excellent choice for families with children. Many of the camp staff are parents themselves and are great with young kids. There are loads of activities for children, such as playing hide-and-seek with the Ol Pejeta anti-poaching dogs. Many activities also have a conservation element, teaching children about the threats facing wildlife and ecosystems across Kenya and beyond, and what they can do to help. The minimum child age at Ol Pejeta Bush Camp is 5 years of age.

Ol Pejeta is an excellent choice for families with children. Many of the camp staff are parents themselves and are great with young kids. There are loads of activities for children, such as playing hide-and-seek with the Ol Pejeta anti-poaching dogs. Many activities also have a conservation element, teaching children about the threats facing wildlife and ecosystems across Kenya and beyond, and what they can do to help. The minimum child age at Ol Pejeta Bush Camp is 5 years of age.
