Today, enjoy a Gorilla Trek in Volcanoes National Park.
Gorilla trekking takes place from Volcanoes National Park headquarters where guests are allocated one of the twelve habituated gorilla groups to visit for an hour. After a briefing by Park rangers, the time of the trek varies depending which gorilla group is being visited – from 45 minutes to a few hours. Trekking is at a high altitude, but is well worth it; the time spent with gorillas has been described as “life changing!”
Twelve habituated groups can be tracked and observed in the Volcanoes National Park. While tracking expeditions do not necessarily cover enormous distances, they can range in length from 1-8 km (0.5-5 miles) over very steep country at high altitudes. The undergrowth can be thick, the ground beneath muddy, and, including the time spent with a gorilla group, excursions can last between 2 and 8 hours. Our exhilarating trek, in the footsteps of the rare and critically endangered Mountain Gorillas, the largest living primate on earth, starts in the cultivated foothills of the Virungas with stirring views in all directions. Upon entering the national park, her paths littered with fresh spoor of the mountains’ elusive buffalo and elephant, trekkers will be immersed in the mysterious intimacy of the rainforest, alive with colorful bird calls, butterflies, etc. Through gaps in the canopy, the magnificent Virunga peaks, among the highest in Africa yet easily accessible, are glimpsed, beckoning an ascent.
Weaving through overhanging vines, moss-covered hagenia and giant lobelias that thrive in the tropical climate, our experienced trackers, they spent their entire lives in or close to this forest, soon bring us up close with the family. Upon sighting the gorillas, you will stay with them for a magical hour as they go about their daily life, feeding, playing, resting; raising their young. Coming face to face with a giant silverback must truly be one of the greatest wildlife experiences on earth.
Gorilla viewing protocol is based on the guidelines issued by the IUCN for great ape viewing. Such protocols are designed specifically to limit stress and behavioral impact and also potential disease transmission from humans to gorillas. They are critical for gorilla conservation.
Maximum viewing duration of any group is 1 hour per day.
Maximum number of guests per gorilla tracking excursion is 8.
No food or drinks can be consumed close to the gorillas.
Smoking is not allowed.
Do not litter.
Spitting in the Park is strictly prohibited.
While gorilla sightings and encounters are very reliable, viewing is dependent on variables such as weather and tracking conditions.
When with the gorillas, please keep your voice low. Do not make rapid movements that may alarm them.
Should you need to cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and turn away from the gorillas.
If a gorilla should charge or vocalize at you, do not be alarmed, stand still, look away from the gorilla and follow your guide’s instructions.
Minimum age for gorilla viewing is 15 years – this is for reasons of safety but also for possible disease transmission, with children under this age more prone to infection.
Again, to minimize possible transmission of human diseases, visitors are asked to maintain a distance of 7 meters (about 22 feet) from the gorillas. Guests that display cold, flu or other respiratory tract symptoms will not be allowed to track gorillas.

Game Drives: Daily game drives with professional guides provide the perfect opportunity to get up close to Africa’s incredible animals, while evening drives reveal the elusive magic of nocturnal Africa.
Community Visits: Perhaps Africa’s greatest beauty is its people and, as part of Singita’s deep commitment to community development, guests are invited to visit the nearby communities. The Grumeti Fund Community Outreach Program works with residents of the 21 villages bordering Singita Grumeti to realise their development goals. We partner with these communities to address issues of education, natural resource management, enterprise development and water management. We encourage guests to visit these communities to experience the success of these projects firsthand.
Guided Safari Walks: Walking safaris are an incredible way to experience the bush up close and personal. Your expert guide and tracker will accompany you as you track animals on foot through the wilderness and explore the magnificent plants and landscapes around you. We suggest a minimum age of 15 years for this activity, but participation is at the discretion of your Field Guide.
Stargazing: There is perhaps no more transcendent experience than looking up at a full sky of sparkling stars. Man has had a love affair with the nighttime sky for centuries and with very little pollution and no city lights to detract for the stars, your view of the heavens here will be crystal clear – nothing between you and the vast African sky above.
Archery: Spend a morning on taking lessons from your guide on how to shoot with a bow and arrow. With a bow for children and a professional compound bow with arrows for adults, it is a fun activity for the whole group.

Enjoy the day at your leisure to enjoy the activities at Royal Chundu Island Lodge.
Signature Canoe Trip: As an homage to our family’s personal history on the Zambezi River, we offer picnics along the banks of the river just as our family had picnics in the past: Persian carpets, hammocks, Pimms upon arrival, picnic tables and sumptuous tapas lunches or breakfasts which will find you restoring your soul while listening to the rapids coursing past you.
Start with a leisurely paddle down the Zambezi to our secret picnic spot on an island – and enjoy a truly indulgent and creative meal on the banks of the river. Cocktails, homemade cordials, a gin bar… It’s romantic, fun and offers up delicious flavors.
You will go over some very gentle rapids – and you will get wet! You can choose to paddle (as little or much as you want), or just sit back and let the guides do all the work. A hat and sunscreen are essential!
Katombora Island Walk: Step off the boat onto our wild islet downstream from River Lodge and discover this untamed microcosm of nature for yourself. A guided walk past python creepers, 23 baobabs, and 2,000-year-old jackalberry trees. Our experienced guides will share their knowledge with you about the traditional and medicinal uses of the flora you will come across on the island. Untainted by development or animals, beside the odd baboon, this area represents the perfect ecosystem at play.
Sunset Cruise: We have 15 kms of private Zambezi to explore and enjoy. Cruise on the river with snacks and drinks, watch the sun go down and try not fill up your camera’s memory with the first sunset – there will be more! You can cast a line and see what bites (strictly catch and release).
Watch crocodiles slip off the banks as you approach and listen to the snorting hippos. In the drier months the skipper will anchor near “Ellie Corner” where you can spot herds of elephants as they drink, play and bathe on the river’s edge nearby. You could also be lucky enough to see baboon, impala, warthog and buffalo.

What better way to see the magical winding Zambezi River and the crashing of the Victoria Falls than from above in a helicopter?
You can enjoy a riveting helicopter flight over the Falls (the trip lasts approximately 12 minutes) or fly over the Falls, gorge and game park (for about 25 minutes). Look out for the wildlife and other sights below. You’re going to want your camera with you on this trip!
Flight of Angels
To put the Victoria Falls into true perspective, they must really be seen from the air. The sheer size and grandeur of the spectacle becomes all the more clearer from above. The huge Zambezi River flowing slowly south as the water spreads across the full width of a great rent in the earth before crashing over the lip in a burst of spray and then squeezing into a narrow, foaming, blast of water rushing down the zigzag funnel of the gorges. Hippos and crocodiles are clearly visible in the shallow waters, as well as elephants quietly browsing on bright green islands.
Let the flight tell you the story of how the vegetation disperses itself to share sunlight and water. How the river craned a path across the world and how when the sun bounces off the surface of the water leaving behind a speck of light, so it appears there are a thousand diamonds glittering on the mighty river’s back.

Today, you will visit a Himba Community.
The Himba, one of the last tribes in Namibia still attempting to preserve and live their customs and traditions. The challenge of how to let a bronze age culture survive in our modern world without people living in museums is not a simple task. This proud nation, especially the regal women may just be up tp this task. Their appearance is not accidental, each aspect either having practical reasons or represent age or status.
The daily life explained on your visit is fascinating, each facet reflected in their striking appearance. But beware, your visit may not be a one-sided affair, you too could be asked questions, your answers and their reactions will give you a greater understanding of who the Himba are.

One of our highlights, guided quad bike excursions through the fragile environs, is done with utmost care along specifically allocated pathways, so as to tread lightly on the dunes and preserve the unique and delicate habitats of this landscape.
Boating on the Kunene River (water levels permitting) provides our guests with the opportunity to venture through the lush riverside oases. Crocodiles and waterbirds seem out of place in this surreal, lunar-like landscape.
