Enjoy a full day of game viewing activities at Leroo La Tau. The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park stretches away from the banks of the Boteti River, through its hinterland of scrub and grassland. The river and the nutrient-rich western grasslands supply the essential water and sustenance for the herds that inhabit the park. Leroo La Tau is situated on the western bank of the Boteti River, north-west of Khumaga village, about 140 kilometres south-east of Maun. The river’s eastern bank forms the boundary of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. The Boteti River is the main outflow of the Okavango Delta, collecting the water that flows past Maun, then continuing about 250 km south-eastwards, finally ending at Lake Xau on the extreme south-western edge of the great Makgadikgadi salt pans.
In the mid-1980s the flood waters of the Okavango Delta started to decline as the region entered a cycle of low rainfall, and consequently the Boteti River began to recede. The river stopped short of Leroo La Tau in 1988, and by the mid-1990s had dried up completely. Leroo La Tau was left with a few waterholes in the riverbed which continued to offer refuge to a small pod of landlocked Hippo, together with Crocodiles which became completely terrestrial, making dens in riverbank ‘caves’ downriver from the lodge. Large numbers of Zebra and Wildebeest continued to graze the rich grass plains, migrating to the Boteti River at the end of winter to access the remaining waterholes. In 2009, two decades after the Boteti River stopped flowing, record rainfall resulted in the highest Okavango flood levels for 25 years, and the river once again flows past Leroo La Tau.
Leroo La Tau is built on cliffs over 10 metres above this changing riparian environment, offering a vantage point that ensures unsurpassed views of the river and the Makgadikgadi Pans to the east.
The lodge offers guided day and night game drives. Depending on the water level, boat activities are also provided. An optional cultural excursion to Khumaga Village, as well as guided nature walks in the area surrounding the lodge, can be arranged at no additional charge.
Leroo La Tau translates as ‘lion’s paw’ but, although the surrounding area features abundant Lion, Zebra and Wildebeest, it also boasts Chobe Bushbuck, Leopard, Cheetah, Brown and Spotted Hyena, Impala, Kudu, Jackal, Porcupine, Genet and Caracal, to name but a few.

For those looking to get a little closer to nature, guided bush walks are conducted on a number of the nearby islands, offering an opportunity to track some of the larger land-based species that inhabit this water wilderness. Bird-watching opportunities are outstanding, and fishing for bream and tiger fish is also offered as an activity.
Between activities Camp Okavango’s traditional thatch and lethaka (reed) main lodge offers a quiet place to hang out, with a cocktail bar, lounge and wildlife reference library. The dining room leads onto an expansive open-air patio which is perfect for brunch, afternoon tea and tranquil evenings around the fire. Other facilities include a secluded bird-viewing hide and sundeck with plunge pool.

Enjoy a full day of game viewing activities in Chobe National Park. Game drives are conducted in open sided 4X4 vehicles ensuring maximum visibility, while game viewing on the Chobe River is conducted by small, shallow draft and highly maneuverable boats piloted by expert boatmen. Your resident professional guides offer slide shows, star gazing presentations, garden and river walks and walking safaris in the nearby Kasane forests.
Wildlife roams in profusion and diversity. The elephant population within Chobe National Park is estimated to be 30,000, which is the largest single concentration in Africa. During the harsh season the herds migrate south to north and congregate along the fertile flood plains of the perennial Chobe River. Other major species such as lion, white rhino, wild fog, sable and roan antelope are encountered in many areas of the reserve.
The river-front during the dry season experiences spectacular concentrations of game, with vast herds of elephant coming down to the river to drink daily. It is by no means only elephant that congregate here. Every species of animal, including the rare Chobe bushbuck and puku, are found here, and predators enjoy rich pickings. The river itself affords opportunities, and a boat trip on the river will expose crocodile, hippo and a plethora of water-birds in addition to the game along the banks.
