Lamego

Lamego

Resting among the terraced, vineyard-laden slopes of the Douro Valley, Lamego is a city and municipality in the Viseu District of Northern Portugal. The delightful Baroque town is decorated by narrow winding streets and a central square surrounded by elegant 17th-century buildings. History enthusiasts can visit a grand twelfth-century castle and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies, one of the country's most important pilgrimage places. The town is famous for its wine, most notably the fruity sparkling wine kept underground in caves, where a secondary fermentation produces its renowned fizz. Don't miss a visit to the Serra da Meada Biological Park, a hilltop animal sanctuary providing a home for deer, foxes, horses and a diversity of birds.
