Set in the Nathdwara district just 30 kilometres north of Udaipur, Delwara is a small historical town known for its wealth of temples, beautiful Palera Talab Lake, and the culturally-important Sadhna Workshop. The many temples range from monumental marble palaces to intricately decorated, bejewelled sites of worship constituting Delwara’s major drawcard. The tranquil man-made Palera Talab Lake, meaning ‘protector’ in Sanskrit, dates from 1875 and is adorned with two charming pavilions, ideal for a leisurely day of picnicking. Visitors wanting to buy gorgeous colourful clothes and contribute to a worthy cause can shop at the Sadhna Workshop, an NGO which provides an alternative means of livelihood to the women of slum areas in Rajasthan, and trains them to make garments and accessories which are sold on site and at exhibitions.
